Cerro Coso Offers Geology this Fall...Rockin' the Eastern Sierra

August 18, 2008

The Cerro Coso College Geology Department is offering the following field trip class starting from the Bishop Campus on September 6 and 7, 2008.  Fall semester classes begin Monday, August 25.

Students can register online or at the Bishop Campus for Physical Science103, Fire and Ice: Geology of the Eastern Sierra.  This is a  1 unit class meeting on September  6 and 7, 2008.The spectacular mountain scenery of the Eastern Sierra has some of the youngest volcanoes and glaciers in North America. On this field trip students will look at the geologic field evidence for the cataclysmic volcanic eruption that created the Long Valley Caldera, rearranged much of the landscape in the Eastern Sierra, and initiated a period of active volcanism that continues today. “We will also look at evidence for equally cataclysmic and geologically recent climate change” stated Dr. Dave Miller, instructor for the class. Stops on the trip will include Bishop Creek, Owens Gorge, Convict Lake, Hot Creek, and the Saddlebag Lake area of Tioga Pass. For more information contact the Bishop Campus at 4090 W.
